The Great Plateau: Being an Account of Exploration in Central Tibet, 1903, and of the Gartok Expedition 1904-1905vvv

London: Edward Arnold, 1905. First Edition. Octavo, xii, 324, 16 pages, bound in the publisher's original blue cloth-covered boards, lettered and decorated in gilt. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white plates and two large folding maps. An important account of early twentieth-century exploration in Tibet by British Army officer and explorer Captain Cecil Godfrey Rawling (1870–1917). The work chronicles Rawling's expeditions into the remote and little-explored regions of Central and Western Tibet between 1903 and 1905, including his participation in the Gartok Expedition. Rich in geographical observations, descriptions of the Tibetan landscape, and encounters with local inhabitants, the narrative offers a fascinating perspective on a region that remained largely inaccessible to Europeans. Rawling's journeys contributed significantly to contemporary geographical knowledge of the Tibetan Plateau and the surrounding Himalayan regions. An important work of British imperial exploration and Himalayan travel literature, providing valuable firsthand documentation of Tibet during a period of increasing British political and geographical interest in the region. Some rubbing and wear, a few bumps to the edges of the boards, a large closed tear to the title page, there are also small tears to the fold-out maps, slight discoloration, else in good + condition.
