Directory and Hand-Book of the Meat and Provision Trades and Their Allied Industries for the United States and Canada
New York: National Provisioner Publishing Co., 1895. First Edition. Octavo, 441 pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered blue cloth-covered boards. An extensive late nineteenth-century trade directory documenting the meatpacking, provision, and allied industries throughout the United States and Canada. Published during a period of rapid industrial expansion, the work provides a valuable contemporary record of the businesses, manufacturers, merchants, and suppliers involved in the production, processing, and distribution of meat and related products. Featuring numerous period advertisements, including illustrated examples, the directory offers a fascinating glimpse into the commercial practices, products, and enterprises that shaped the North American meat industry at the close of the nineteenth century. An important reference for the study of American business history, food production, and industrial development.
Provenance: Two ink ownership stamps reading "Z. Russ & Sons Co." appear on the title page and at the beginning of the "Pork and Beef Packers" section, suggesting possible use as a commercial reference. Later from the personal library of noted American food historian Dr. William Woys Weaver, acquired directly from Weaver at his historic residence, Roughwood, in Devon, Pennsylvania. Very minimal rubbing and wear, the fold-out chart is nearly detached, previous owner's ink stamp, else in very good + condition. Item #687
