First edition of Orsamus Turner's *Pioneer History of the Holland Purchase of Western New York* (1849), an extensive and historically significant account of the early history, settlement, and development of western New York. The work examines the region's Indigenous history, particularly the Iroquois Confederacy, including its political organization, traditions, and conflicts with European settlers. Turner also chronicles the colonial period, frontier warfare during the American Revolution, and the acquisition and settlement of vast tracts of land by the Holland Land Company. Drawing upon historical documents, personal recollections, and accounts of early settlers, the book provides valuable insight into pioneer life, the War of 1812, and the construction of the Erie Canal. Illustrated with maps, portraits, and historical engravings, this substantial volume remains an important nineteenth-century reference for the history of western New York, the Iroquois, and American westward expansion. Old tape attached to the covers, newspaper clippings on the inside of the top board, some damage to spine, discoloration and foxing, some rubbing and wear, previous owner's inscription, else in good + condition.
