An extensive nineteenth-century compendium devoted to the geography, geology, natural resources, agriculture, commerce, government, population, transportation, and general development of Alabama, the work was intended as a practical reference to the state during the Reconstruction era. Of particular interest is its geological content and accompanying map prepared in connection with Eugene A. Smith, State Geologist of Alabama, providing an important early visual record of the state’s geological formations and mineral resources. Berney’s handbook remains a useful source for the study of Alabama history, economic development, cartography, and Southern Americana.
