First edition of Henry Glapthorne’s scarce Caroline comedy, *The Hollander: A Comedy, Written 1635. And now Printed as it was then, Acted at the Cock-pit in Drury lane, by their Majesties Servants, with good allowance. And at the Court before both their Majesties*, printed in London in 1640 by I. Okes for A. Wilson. Written in 1635, the play was performed at the Cockpit Theatre in Drury Lane by Their Majesties’ Servants and was also acted at Court before King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. A notable example of Caroline drama and early modern English theater, *The Hollander* belongs to the final flourishing of the English Renaissance stage before the Parliamentary closing of the theaters in 1642. Glapthorne’s comedy combines romantic intrigue, satire, and social observation, and survives as an uncommon example of seventeenth-century English dramatic literature in its original printed form. An appealing work for collectors of English literature, theater history, Renaissance and Caroline drama, early printed books, and seventeenth-century British literature. This copy is complete in text, lacking only the initial blank leaf.
