Illustrated throughout with hand-colored maps. A detailed late nineteenth-century landownership atlas of the Washington metropolitan region, compiled and published by Philadelphia cartographer G. M. Hopkins. The work maps the area within approximately fifteen miles of Washington, D.C., with particular attention to Fairfax and Alexandria Counties, Virginia, recording roads, waterways, communities, property divisions, and the names of individual landowners. Hopkins’s atlases are especially valued as primary sources for local history, genealogy, real estate history, and the development of the Washington suburbs during the post-Civil War period. The maps were issued with original hand coloring, characteristic of American county and landownership atlases of the period. A significant cartographic record of Northern Virginia and the rapidly developing region surrounding the nation’s capital. The Library of Congress records the work as Phillips 1500.
