Facsimile of George Webb Derenzy’s 1822 *Enchiridion*, an uncommon early work devoted to the practical problems faced by persons with the use of only one hand. Drawing upon his own experience following the loss of an arm during military service, Derenzy describes a number of mechanical devices and adaptations intended to facilitate ordinary domestic, social, and occupational activities. The work is of particular interest in the history of prosthetics, rehabilitation, disability, and assistive technology, and provides an unusual contemporary record of early nineteenth-century efforts to restore independence through mechanical ingenuity.
