In Darkest Africa; or, The Quest, Rescue, and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria is Henry M. Stanley’s account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1887–1889, one of the most famous and controversial episodes of nineteenth-century African exploration. Stanley describes the expedition’s arduous journey through the Congo Basin and the Ituri Forest into Equatoria, combining travel narrative, geographical observation, ethnographic description, military adventure, and accounts of encounters with African peoples and European colonial interests. Richly illustrated and accompanied by detailed folding maps, the work documents Central and East Africa at a pivotal moment in the age of exploration and imperial expansion.
