Slim octavo, 38 pages, period gilt-lettered black cloth covered boards. An attractive contemporary presentation copy of Governor Daniel H. Hastings’s final message to the Pennsylvania General Assembly, delivered January 3, 1899, near the close of his administration. The address surveys the condition and affairs of the Commonwealth at the end of the nineteenth century, touching on matters of state government, public finance, education, industry, and Pennsylvania’s institutional development. Bound in period black cloth with gilt lettering. Of particular interest is the purple ink stamp on the front free endpaper reading “Compliments of Jeremiah Roth, House of Reps. Pa.” Roth was then serving as a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from Lehigh County and was a sitting member of the General Assembly to which Hastings’s message was delivered. A pleasing Pennsylvania political association copy with direct contemporary legislative provenance. Front hinge cracked, small chip to fore edge of rear board, some discoloration to endpapers, rubbing and wear, else in good + condition. Item #531
