Notes on Ecclesiology

Notes on Ecclesiology by John B. Anderson is an uncommon theological work examining the nature, organization, doctrine, government, ministry, and practices of the Christian Church. This copy comprises 116 pages printed primarily on the rectos of the leaves, with the index printed on both sides. Its unusual production suggests that the work may have originated as a privately printed textbook, typescript reproduction, or set of lecture notes intended for limited use among theological students rather than for ordinary commercial distribution. Although the title page is absent, the name appearing at the head of the first page appears to be the author’s signature.
John B. Anderson, D.D., was Professor of English Bible and Ecclesiology at Colgate Theological Seminary in Hamilton, New York, during the early twentieth century. His academic responsibilities included biblical study and ecclesiology, the branch of theology concerned with the character, purpose, structure, authority, and ordinances of the Church. The volume’s institutional markings, including “Closed Stacks BV 600 A7” and the penciled notation “C.R.D.S. Coll,” indicate former ownership by the Colgate Rochester Divinity School or a predecessor institution and strongly support its connection with Anderson’s teaching at Colgate. The work is of particular interest for the study of American Baptist theology, ecclesiology, church government, theological education, and the history of Colgate Theological Seminary.
