Scott considers the significance of stainable substances within nerve cells and advances the then-progressive view that nervous function could be understood in part through cellular metabolism and secretion. Originally published in Brain: A Journal of Neurology, one of the leading neurological periodicals of the period, the article reflects the growing early twentieth-century effort to connect microscopic cellular structure with the functioning of the nervous system.
