A substantial colonial American theological work in which Jonathan Dickinson addresses questions of conversion, faith, repentance, justification, assurance, and the evidences of genuine Christian experience. Written as a series of letters to an unnamed gentleman, the work combines doctrinal argument with practical spiritual counsel and reflects the religious controversies of the Great Awakening, especially the distinction between sincere conversion and mere emotional enthusiasm or outward profession. Lacks the front free endpaper, the preliminary leaf containing pages iii–iv, and two leaves containing pages 7–10, hinges cracked with boards hanging on by threads, Maryland College Library bookplate, on the back of the title a previous owner's inscription reads "Jonathan Greenleaf His Book 1750" on the top of page 1 it is also inscribed "Jonathan Greenleaf His Book", on the rear free endpaper is a later inscription that reads "Sarah Currier's Book / A present from her Mother", some pages are a little loose, some discoloration and foxing, rubbing and wear, else in good condition.
