Thomas Thomson’s The History of Chemistry is an important early survey of the development of chemical science, tracing its origins in ancient philosophy and alchemy through the discoveries and theories that helped establish modern chemistry. Thomson, a prominent Scottish chemist and early advocate of Dalton’s atomic theory, combines scientific history with accounts of the principal figures, experiments, and controversies that shaped the discipline. This is volume I only of the two-volume work, published in London by Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley in 1830, and attractively bound in quarter green leather by Neumann Binders. The volume bears the bookplate of “Charles F. Cox, New York,” identified as Charles Finney Cox (1846–1912), the noted scientist, microscopist, bibliophile, and former president of the New York Academy of Sciences, providing especially appropriate provenance for a work devoted to the history of science.
