Aus den vier Jahreszeiten

München: Friedrich Bruckmann's Verlag, 1880. First Edition. Large folio, 32 leaves printed on the rectos only, publisher's original decorative binding. All edges gilt. White silk moire endpapers. Profusely illustrated throughout. Text in German. Aus den vier Jahreszeiten is a large and beautifully illustrated German art book combining the imaginative drawings of Eduard Unger with accompanying text by Max Nonnenbruch. Published in Munich by Friedrich Bruckmann in 1880, the work presents an elaborate visual celebration of the four seasons through woodland scenes, fairies, insects, flowers, children, and other fanciful figures rendered in a richly decorative late nineteenth-century style. The volume is especially notable for its ornamental title page and its series of full-page compositions, each printed on one side of the leaf only, giving the book the character of a finely produced portfolio or gift book. Appealing both as an example of German Victorian-era illustration and as a work of fantasy art, it would be of interest to collectors of decorative books, fairy imagery, children’s literature, seasonal symbolism, and nineteenth-century European illustration. Minor rubbing and wear, now in a protective clear mylar jacket, else in very good + condition. Item #430
