The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali. An Interpretation by William Q. Judge, Assisted by James Henderson Connelly.
New York: The Path, 1890. Second Edition. 12mo, xiv, 64, [1] pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered and decorated blue cloth covered boards. Early Theosophical interpretation of Patanjali’s Yoga Aphorisms, rendered by William Q. Judge with the assistance of James Henderson Connelly. Published in New York by The Path in 1890, this second edition presents one of the foundational texts of Hindu philosophy and Raja Yoga for a Western Theosophical audience. Rather than a strictly academic translation, Judge’s version is an interpretive rendering intended to explain the spiritual discipline of yoga, including concentration, meditation, self-mastery, detachment, purification of the mind, and the attainment of higher consciousness. The work reflects the late 19th-century Theosophical interest in Eastern philosophy, Indian religion, occult study, metaphysics, and esoteric wisdom, and remains an important early American presentation of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras through the lens of Theosophy. Some rubbing and wear to the covers, front hinge cracked, previous owner's neat bookplate and inscription, some minor discoloration, else in good + condition. Item #406
