Memorials of Elder John White, one of The First Settlers of Hartford, Conn., and of His Descendants
Hartford: Printed for the Family by Case, Lockwood and Company, 1860. First Edition. Octavo, xviii, 321, [1] pages, bound in quarter leather over marbled boards. Raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Memorials of Elder John White is an important 19th-century New England genealogy tracing the life and descendants of Elder John White, one of the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut. Compiled by Allyn S. Kellogg and published in Hartford in 1860, the volume records the White family line from the early colonial period through later generations, with particular relevance to Hartford, Hadley, and related New England families. The work is valued by genealogists and collectors of early Connecticut history, both as a family record and as a document of the 19th-century effort to preserve the memory of New England’s founding families.
Provenance: With the bookplate of Clarence H. Clark (1833–1906) to the front pastedown, likely Clarence Howard Clark of Philadelphia, a prominent banker, businessman, collector, and bibliophile. Clark was associated with one of Philadelphia’s notable banking families and assembled a substantial private library, portions of which were later dispersed in early 20th-century auction sales. In the corner of the same board is an old partially manuscript catalog/accession label reading: “No. 846 / Vols. in Set 1 / No. in Set 1 / Acc: 5578.” No other library markings observed. The form of the label, with its numbered fields for set and accession information, appears consistent with the systematic cataloging of an organized private library rather than with ordinary institutional library use. While the label may relate to Clark’s own library cataloging system, this has not been independently verified. Some slight rubbing and wear, scuffs, hinges tender, else in very good condition.
