The Children’s Party; or, A Day at Upland
London: S. W. Partridge, 1863. First Edition Thus. 12mo, 80, [12] pages, publisher's original blind-stamped and gilt decorated purple cloth covered boards. The Children’s Party; or, A Day at Upland is a scarce Victorian juvenile work published by S. W. Partridge of London, a firm known for moral, religious, and improving books for young readers. Although undated, the book is likely an early or mid-1860s issue, with other recorded copies and contemporary references suggesting a date of circa 1863. Written under the pseudonym “Cousin Helen,” the work presents a collection of stories in prose and verse framed around a children’s gathering at Upland. This copy is paginated 80, [12] pages, with publisher’s advertisements at the rear, three full-page plates, and additional in-text illustrations; page 80 ends complete. A pleasing example of mid-19th-century children’s literature, combining domestic storytelling, moral instruction, and illustrated entertainment in the manner typical of Partridge’s juvenile publications. Some discoloration and fading to the cloth, boards slightly splayed, previous owner's inscription and marginalia, some discoloration and soiling, else in good + condition. Item #395
