A Leaf from the Mercator-Hondius World Atlas: Edition of 1619, with an Essay.
Fullerton, California: Stone & Lorson, 1985. First Edition, Limited to 115 copies, this being one of 89 copies bound in quarter vellum. Large folio, (19.5" x 13.25"), 23 pages, publisher's original quarter vellum over paper covered boards. Publisher's original brown cloth slipcase. Spine with gilt lettering. Gilt decoration to both boards. A Leaf from the Mercator-Hondius World Atlas: Edition of 1619, with an essay by Norman J. W. Thrower, is a finely produced limited-edition cartographic leaf book issued by Stone & Larson in 1985. This copy is one of only 89 copies quarter-bound in vellum and contains an original hand-colored map leaf from the 1619 Mercator-Hondius atlas, in this case a map of Hungary. Thrower’s essay places the leaf within the broader history of Gerard Mercator, Jodocus Hondius, and the development of early modern atlas-making, while the original map itself provides a direct connection to one of the great names in the history of cartography. A desirable volume for collectors of maps, atlas leaves, fine press books, Hungary and Central European history, and the Mercator-Hondius cartographic tradition. Discoloration and a small chip to the margin of the map. Some rubbing and wear to the slipcase, else in very good + condition. Item #393
