Superior Cookery

London: Collins' Clear-Type Press, c.1895. Later printing "Thirty-Fifth Thousand" Octavo, 200 pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered blue cloth covered boards. Illustrated with eight full-page color plates. Mrs. Black’s Superior Cookery is a late 19th-century Victorian cookbook and household guide devoted to practical, refined domestic cookery. This later printing stated “Thirty-Fifth Thousand” and issued by Collins’ Clear-Type Press, reflects the book’s considerable popularity as a useful guide for the home cook. The work includes instruction in a wide range of culinary subjects, including soups, sauces, fish, meats, poultry, vegetables, entrées, puddings, cakes, confectionery, preserving, pickling, and other household preparations. Complete with all 8 plates, this copy is an appealing example of Victorian culinary publishing, women’s domestic literature, and the period’s emphasis on orderly household management, economy, and well-prepared home cooking.
