First edition of this posthumous collection of the poems of Lucretia Maria Davidson, gathered and arranged by her mother, Margaret Miller Davidson, with a biographical memoir by Catharine Maria Sedgwick. Davidson was one of the celebrated young American women poets of the early nineteenth century, admired for the precocity and delicacy of her verse before her death at only sixteen. This volume preserves her literary remains and helped secure her reputation within the sentimental and domestic literary culture of antebellum America. Published in Philadelphia by Lea and Blanchard in 1841, the book is also notable for its association with Sedgwick, one of the most important American women writers of the period, and for having been reviewed by Edgar Allan Poe in Graham’s Magazine later that year. Small loss to bottom of spine, damage to top of spine and corners, scattered foxing and discoloration throughout, previous owner's inscription, else in good + condition. Item #379
