Philadelphia: C. Sherman, 1854. Octavo, 167 pages, bound in the publisher’s original blind-stamped cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. Illustrated with black-and-white plates. Cowper Illustrated by a Series of Views in or near the Park of Weston-Underwood, Buckinghamshire is an attractive illustrated work devoted to the scenery and literary associations of William Cowper, one of the most beloved English poets of the late eighteenth century. The book presents a series of engraved views of Weston Underwood and the surrounding Buckinghamshire landscape, accompanied by descriptive text and biographical material relating to Cowper’s life and writings. Cowper lived for many years in this area, and its walks, gardens, woods, and rural prospects are closely associated with his poetry, particularly the reflective and descriptive passages of The Task. This 1854 edition offers a pleasing mid-nineteenth-century American printing of an earlier illustrated Cowper work, combining literary biography, topographical description, and engraved views of places connected with the poet. Spine sunned, some discoloration and foxing, corner bumped, previous owner's inscription, else in very good condition. Item #374
