The Heroes in Gray. By a Confederate Soldier.

Lynchburg, Va: Gregory Brothers, 1894. First Edition. Octavo, 140 pages, publisher's original printed wraps. The Heroes in Gray. By a Confederate Soldier is a scarce late nineteenth-century Confederate reminiscence, published in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1894. Written by Robert Burcher Stratton, a veteran of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, the work records episodes of Confederate military life, campaigning, comradeship, hardship, and memory from the perspective of a former Southern soldier. Issued nearly thirty years after the Civil War, the book belongs to the postwar literature of Confederate remembrance, when veterans sought to preserve their experiences and memorialize the soldiers who served in the Army of Northern Virginia and related commands. As such, it is of interest for collectors of Civil War memoirs, Virginia history, Confederate regimental material, Lost Cause-era publications, and nineteenth-century Southern imprints. Some losses, chips, tears and tape repairs to wraps, loss to the tipped-in presentation slip, title page with closed tear, else in good condition. Item #369
