Reminiscences of H. P. Blavatsky and "The Secret Doctrine"

London: Theosophical Publishing Society, 1893. First Edition. Octavo, 162, [2] pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered grey cloth covered boards. With the previous owner's neat bookplate. Reminiscences of H. P. Blavatsky and “The Secret Doctrine” is an important early Theosophical memoir centered on H. P. Blavatsky during the period surrounding the composition and publication of her major work, The Secret Doctrine. Written chiefly by Countess Constance Wachtmeister, one of Blavatsky’s close associates and companions, the volume offers a first-hand account of Blavatsky’s daily life, working habits, personality, illnesses, controversies, and the intense labor involved in preparing The Secret Doctrine. Published in 1893, only two years after Blavatsky’s death, the book is especially valuable as a near-contemporary witness to the inner circle of early Theosophy, combining personal reminiscence, defense of Blavatsky’s character, and documentary insight into the creation of one of the central texts of modern occult and esoteric thought. It remains a desirable title for collectors of Theosophy, Blavatsky, occult biography, 19th-century esotericism, and the history of the Theosophical Society. Some slight rubbing, previous owner's ink stamp, corners slightly bumped, some occasional marginalia in pencil, else in very good condition. Item #357
