Rochester, N.Y. Charles H. McDonell, 1852. First Edition. 12mo, 256 pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered and blind stamped brown cloth covered boards. Voices from the Spirit World: Being Communications from Many Spirits. By the Hand of Isaac Post, Medium is an important early American Spiritualist work, published in Rochester, New York, in 1852, only a few years after the famous Fox sisters’ spirit rappings helped launch the modern Spiritualist movement in western New York. Isaac Post, a Quaker reformer, abolitionist, and early convert to Spiritualism, presents the volume as a series of communications received through his hand from departed spirits, including such historical and religious figures as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, William Penn, Emanuel Swedenborg, Elias Hicks, George Fox, Voltaire, and others. The book is especially interesting as a product of the same reform-minded Rochester milieu that linked Spiritualism with Quaker dissent, abolitionism, women’s rights, and radical religious inquiry. As an early and substantial example of American spirit communication literature, it is highly desirable for collectors of Spiritualism, occult history, mediumship, religious reform movements, 19th-century American esotericism, and the origins of modern Spiritualism. Some rubbing and wear, soiling to the cloth, spine sunned, previous owner's inscription, scattered foxing and discoloration, else in good + condition. Item #355
