Four Infantrymen
New York: Alfred H. King, 1930. First American Edition. Octavo, 220 pages, publisher's original color pictorial dust jacket designed by Paul Wenck. Publisher's original cloth covered boards. Four Infantrymen is Ernst Johannsen’s stark antiwar novel of the First World War, following four German soldiers through the brutal physical and psychological reality of trench warfare on the Western Front. First published in German as Vier von der Infanterie, the work belongs to the powerful wave of interwar antiwar literature that followed in the wake of All Quiet on the Western Front, emphasizing disillusionment, exhaustion, mechanized violence, and the dehumanizing effects of modern war. Johannsen’s novel was also the basis for G. W. Pabst’s acclaimed 1930 film Westfront 1918. This 1930 Alfred H. King edition is the First American Edition, preceding the English edition, and is especially desirable in the scarce original pictorial dust jacket. Ex-library with some of the typical markings. The dust jacket has been glued down to the inner sides of the boards. Some rubbing and wear, slight discoloration boards slightly splayed, else in good + condition. Item #348
