Bombay: Published by Tookaram Tatya for the Bombay Theosophical Publication Fund, ND [1890]. First Edition. Octavo, ii [1], viii, 99, vii, 4 pages, publisher's original red cloth over paper covered boards. The Yoga-Sutra of Patanjali, translated by Manilal Nabhubhai Dvivedi, is an English presentation of one of the foundational texts of classical Yoga philosophy. The work explains yoga not primarily as physical exercise, but as a disciplined mental, moral, and spiritual system aimed at stilling the fluctuations of the mind and attaining higher knowledge or liberation. Patanjali’s aphorisms discuss concentration, meditation, detachment, ethical restraints, self-discipline, the nature of consciousness, obstacles to spiritual progress, and the stages of yogic attainment. Dvivedi’s translation is especially significant because it frames the ancient Sanskrit text through 19th-century Indian philosophical and Theosophical interpretation, with notes and commentary meant to make the difficult sutras intelligible to English-speaking readers interested in Hindu philosophy, metaphysics, occultism, and comparative religion. Some slight discoloration and rubbing to boards, minor age toning, previous owner's ink stamp, else in very good condition. Item #341
