Kimber, Conrad, & Co. Philadelphia, 1805. Octavo, [10], [2], [2], 17-588, [2], [10[, [2] pages, bound in full leather with gilt bands and red lettered label to spine. With an interesting previous owner's bookplate on the inside of the top board that reads "Joel Smedley. / Little Britain / Lancaster County, (Pa.)" Robert Barclay’s An Apology for the True Christian Divinity is one of the foundational theological works of the Religious Society of Friends, or Quakers. First published in Latin in 1676 and later in English, the book presents a systematic defense of Quaker beliefs, including the inward light, spiritual revelation, simplicity of worship, pacifism, and the rejection of outward sacraments and formal clergy. Written with intellectual rigor and Protestant polemical force, Barclay’s Apology became the classic statement of early Quaker doctrine and remains one of the most important works in the history of Quaker theology and dissenting religious thought. Hinges cracked, chips to spine, rubbing and wear, a few scuffs, some discoloration and foxing, else in good condition. Item #335
