St. Louis: Eureka Publishing Company, 1876. First Edition. Octavo, 208 pages, paper wraps. Illustrated with frontispiece and 5 additional black-and-white plates. Augustus C. Appler’s The Guerrillas of the West; or, The Life, Character and Daring Exploits of the Younger Brothers is a scarce and sensational 1876 account of the Younger brothers and the violent Missouri-Kansas border world from which the James-Younger legend emerged. Published only shortly after the Northfield raid and the capture of Cole, Jim, and Bob Younger, the book presents a highly sympathetic portrait of the brothers, framing their outlaw careers against the Civil War guerrilla conflict, Quantrill’s raiders, Jayhawkers, revenge, family loss, and the assassination of their father, Henry W. Younger. Part outlaw biography, part border-war narrative, and part popular apologia, it is an important early printed source in the mythology of the James-Younger Gang and the transformation of Confederate guerrillas into Western folk-heroes. A desirable piece of Western Americana, Missouri outlaw history, and 19th-century criminal biography. Previous owner's inscriptions, some soiling to wraps, rubbing and wear, tear to frontispiece and a few other small rips, foxing and discoloration, else in good + condition. Item #319
