Schultz’s Deutsch-Amerikanisches Koch-Buch is a scarce 19th-century German-American cookbook published in Milwaukee by C. A. Rhode Co. for German-speaking households in the United States. Written as a practical domestic guide, it gives instructions for preparing all kinds of foods and baked goods “wohlfeil und gut” — cheaply and well — while also covering the preserving of fruits and the making of cordials, wines, beverages, and other household preparations. This copy is especially appealing as a Wisconsin German-American imprint, further strengthened by the D. Blumenfeld & Son, Watertown Weltbürger label on the front pastedown, connecting it to Watertown’s German-language press and immigrant reading community. A desirable example of American immigrant cookery, regional Wisconsin printing, and German-American domestic culture.
