Hans Christian Andersen’s Out of the Heart: Spoken to the Little Ones is a charming Victorian collection of Andersen’s tales and moral stories for children, translated into English by H. W. Dulcken and issued by George Routledge and Sons. This small-format edition is especially appealing as a juvenile gift book, illustrated with sixteen color plates and numerous wood engravings by the Brothers Dalziel, among the most important wood-engravers of the nineteenth century. Blending fairy-tale imagination, Christian sentiment, domestic feeling, and gentle moral instruction, the volume reflects the Victorian enthusiasm for Andersen as both a children’s author and a writer of literary fairy tales. A desirable little Routledge edition for collectors of Hans Christian Andersen, Victorian children’s literature, illustrated books, color-plate books, and Dalziel-engraved publications. Some signs of rubbing and wear, lacks front free endpaper, possibly repaired, hinges weak, textblock shaken, spine sunned, slight discoloration and foxing, else in good + condition. Item #292
