The Iliad of Homer [and] The Odyssey of Homer

Haarlem, Holland: The Limited Editions Club, 1931. First Edition Thus. Of this edition, designed by J. Van Krimpen, fifteen hundred copies have been printed for Members of The Limited Editions Club by Joh. Enschede en Zonen. These are both copy number 86. Signed by the designer, J. Van Krimpen on the limitation pages. Two folios, publisher's original gilt-lettered red and blue cloth covered boards. Publisher's original slipcase for The Iliad. Top edges gilt. Lacking the slipcase for The Odyssey. Edges remain unopened. A distinguished early Limited Editions Club production, this edition of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey presents Alexander Pope’s celebrated English translations in an elegant typographic format designed by the great Dutch book designer Jan van Krimpen. Printed in Haarlem by Joh. Enschedé for the Club in a limitation of 1,500 signed copies, the set is notable for its refined simplicity, handsome red and blue cloth bindings, top edges gilt, and unillustrated presentation, the absence of illustrations reflecting George Macy’s view that Homer demanded the “simple dignity” of pure typography. Long admired by collectors of fine press, Limited Editions Club, classical literature, and book design, this remains one of the most attractive and important interwar LEC classical productions. Some soiling and discoloration to rear board of the Odyssey. Some slight rubbing and wear, spines sunned, minor wear to the slipcase, else in good + to very good condition. Item #287
