Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1892. Eighth Edition. 12mo, xii, [4],152 pages, publisher's original green cloth covered boards with gilt-lettering and decoration. Beveled edges. Top edge gilt. An early posthumous edition of Emily Dickinson’s first published collection, originally issued by Roberts Brothers in 1890 and edited by Mabel Loomis Todd and T. W. Higginson. Published just a few years after Dickinson’s death, Poems introduced her to the reading public and helped establish her reputation as one of the great voices of American poetry. Though later scholarship has shown that the early editors regularized her punctuation and presentation, these early Roberts Brothers editions remain highly desirable as the first book appearances of Dickinson’s verse and as important documents in the history of her reception. This 1892 eighth edition reflects the immediate success and rapid reprinting of the collection in the years following its original publication. Some slight rubbing and wear, half title cleanly detached, front hinge starting to crack, previous owner's inscription dated Christmas 1891, slight damage to top and bottom of spine, corners bumped, else in very good condition.
