Boston: Phillips, Sampson, and Company, 1854. First Edition. 12mo, 167, [1] pages, publisher's original blind-stamped and gilt decorated blue cloth covered boards. All edges gilt. Illustrated with black-and-white plates. Now in a clear protective mylar jacket. The Charm; an Illustrated Book for Boys and Girls is a mid-19th-century American juvenile book published by Phillips, Sampson and Company, and issued as part of the era’s richly illustrated literature for young readers. Printed in 1854, the volume was designed to entertain and instruct, combining attractive illustrations with moral and imaginative reading suited to boys and girls in the Victorian period. As a representative example of antebellum children’s publishing, it reflects the growing market for illustrated juvenile books intended for family reading and gift giving, and remains of interest to collectors of 19th-century children’s literature, illustrated books, and American publisher’s bindings. Some signs of rubbing and wear, slight discoloration, previous owner's inscription dated January 1st, 1855, else in very good condition. Item #253
