The Field of Clover
New York: John Lane, 1902. Engraved by Clemence Housman. Octavo, i, 148, [7] pages, publisher's original pictorial green cloth covered boards with gilt decoration. Top edge gilt. Illustrated in black-and-white. The Field of Clover by Laurence Housman is a late Victorian collection of imaginative fairy tales and literary fantasy, first published in 1898. Later bibliographic records show that stories from the volume were reprinted in A Doorway in Fairyland and include such titles as “The Wishing-Pot,” “The Bound Princess,” and “The Passionate Puppets,” which reflect Housman’s characteristic blend of wonder, symbolism, and decorative fin-de-siècle fancy. As part of Housman’s fairy-tale output, the book is of interest to collectors of Victorian fantasy, English fairy literature, and illustrated literature of the 1890s. Some rubbing and wear, large closed tear to one of the pages of adverts, else in very good condition. Item #239
