Wien: Verlag Von Anton Schroll & Co., 1899. First Edition. Slim folio, v pages of text followed by 24 full-page plates printed on one side of the sheet only. Bound in the publisher’s original gilt-lettered green cloth-covered boards. Sposób zakopiański = Manière de Zakopane = Die Art Zakopane by Edgar Kováts is an early illustrated study of the distinctive Zakopane Style, a national architectural movement that emerged in the late nineteenth century in the Tatra mountain region of southern Poland. Written in Polish, French, and German for an international audience, the work examines the folk-inspired architecture and decorative arts associated with the town of Zakopane and the movement popularized by architect Stanisław Witkiewicz. The book consists of a brief introductory text followed by a series of full-page plates illustrating architectural designs, ornamental carving, and structural details characteristic of the region’s wooden buildings. Issued by the noted Viennese art publisher Anton Schroll, the volume remains an important visual record of the Zakopane Style and the broader late-nineteenth-century effort to develop a distinctly Polish national architecture based on traditional highlander craftsmanship.
