The Clubs of New York
New York: Henry L. Hinton, 1873. First Edition. Octavo, 349, [2] pages, publisher's original gilt-lettered and blind-stamped brick red cloth covered boards. Though the title calls for photographs, this copy appears to have been published without photographic plates. The Clubs of New York, written by Francis Gerry Fairfield and first published in 1873, is a detailed social history of New York City’s most prominent private clubs during the post–Civil War era. The book traces the origins, growth, and membership of leading institutions such as the Union Club, Century Club, Lotos Club, and New York Yacht Club, while also offering a broader essay on the role of club life in shaping elite urban society. As a contemporary account of Gilded Age social networks and leisure culture, it provides valuable insight into the customs and influence of New York’s upper class. Although the title page calls for photographs of notable club members, many first-edition copies, including this example, were issued without the photographs — a well-known characteristic of the original publication. Some slight rubbing and wear, corners slightly bruised, else in very good + condition. Item #206
