Boston: Samuel Walker & Co., 1867. Two quartos, viii, 652pp.; 648 pages, bound in period gilt-lettered and blind stamped full brown leather. Raised bands to spines. All edges gilt. Illustrated throughout in black-and-white. The Southern Rebellion by W. A. Crafts, issued in two volumes and published in Boston by Samuel Walker & Co. in 1867, is a substantial nineteenth-century Civil War history compiled from official documents and contemporary sources. Covering American political and military events from the beginning of President James Buchanan’s administration through the conclusion of the war, the work offers a detailed chronicle of campaigns, battles, expeditions, and political developments from a firmly Union perspective. Although not the first edition, this 1867 set represents an early post-war reissue by the original publisher and remains close in time to the events it records, giving it both historical immediacy and documentary value. As a complete two-volume set, it stands as a solid example of mid-nineteenth-century American historical publishing and remains of interest to collectors of Civil War material and period historiography. Top board of volume one detached, top hinge of volume two cracked, other hinges tender, slight damage to spines, some rubbing and wear, a few scuffs, some foxing and discoloration, else in good + condition.
