First edition of Indian Trees (London: Archibald Constable & Co., 1906), Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To Miss E. Brain in grateful remembrance of her kind, thoughtful, and always cheerful care, which has enabled me, at my age, to accomplish this work. Nov. 20th, 1906, D. Brandis.”
Laid in: A Walk Through Kew Gardens in April. Four pages, printed for private circulation only, “Kew, April 1900. D.B.” An unrecorded pamphlet reflecting Brandis’s long association with the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
Accompanied by: Two original portrait photographs by Elliott & Fry, London—one of Brandis (inscribed on the verso, “Sir Dietrich Brandis, a good friend to family James”), and one of Katharina Brandis (her name and date, “June 1911,” written on the mount).
Together forming a deeply personal and historically significant record of Brandis’s final years—his reflections at Kew, the completion of his magnum opus, and his family circle. A unique survival illustrating the life and legacy of the pioneer of modern forestry in India. Some slight foxing and discoloration, front hinge starting to crack, else in very good condition.
